Method

  • England: NHS England’s list of hospitals in England with a type 1 emergency department (published 14 April 2026).
  • Scotland: Public Health Scotland’s list of A&E sites, keeping those marked open, type 1 and type 3 (minor injury units and similar).
  • Wales: the sites reporting attendances to StatsWales for September 2026, split as StatsWales does into major emergency departments and other emergency departments or minor injury units. StatsWales also reports some minor injury units only as a health board total; those are not listed. Postcodes come from the NHS Organisation Data Service.
  • Each site is placed at the centre of its postcode (postcodes.io, from the ONS Postcode Directory). One Scottish site, Aviemore Health Centre, has a postcode that has since been retired; its last published location is used.
  • Distances are straight lines from the centre point ONS gives for each built-up area. Roads, ferries and traffic make real journeys longer.
  • Department names are as published, with one spelling correction.

Limits

  • We have not found an open official list of urgent treatment centres and minor injury units for England, so England shows only type 1 departments. Use the NHS website’s service finder.
  • Some type 1 departments are for children only; their names say so.
  • Services and opening hours change. Check with the NHS before you travel.
