Flooding

In Northern Ireland the Department for Infrastructure (DfI) leads on flooding. nidirect gives a single number to report flooding: 0300 2000 100.

Flooding: advice and reporting (nidirect) · Rivers and flooding (DfI)

Flood Maps NI is DfI’s interactive map of the latest government flood hazard information. Open the Flood Maps NI viewer and search for a place (pop-ups must be allowed). We have not counted flood areas for Northern Ireland, so no counts are shown.

Weather warnings

The Met Office issues yellow, amber and red warnings for rain, wind, snow, ice, fog, thunderstorms and extreme heat. Current Met Office warnings (choose Northern Ireland on the map) · What the colours mean

Health: NHS help and the nearest A&E

When your GP surgery is closed and you need urgent medical help that cannot wait, nidirect explains how to contact the GP out of hours service for your area. For a life-threatening emergency, call 999.

The nearest emergency departments to the centre of each of the largest built-up areas, by straight-line distance (as the crow flies, not by road):

  • Derry: Altnagelvin Area Hospital (2.1 km); Causeway Hospital (44.8 km); South West Acute Hospital (74.2 km). Nearest minor injuries unit or urgent care centre: Omagh Hospital and Primary Care Complex (45.9 km).
  • Strabane: Altnagelvin Area Hospital (20.8 km); South West Acute Hospital (53.5 km). Nearest minor injuries unit or urgent care centre: Omagh Hospital and Primary Care Complex (29.8 km).

For an emergency that is not immediately life-threatening, nidirect says to use the Phone First service in the Northern, Southern and Western Health and Social Care Trusts; see emergency department waiting times (nidirect), which also shows current waits. The Royal Children’s Hospital emergency department, for children, is not counted above.

Local risks and emergency planning

  • Coast: about 140 km of the council boundary is shoreline at mean high water, by our measurement (this includes tidal estuaries). Coastal flooding and storm surges are possible; the flood areas above include any coastal ones.
  • Northern Ireland does not have local resilience forums or community risk registers like Great Britain’s. The equivalent bodies are Emergency Preparedness Groups; details are available from the Civil Contingencies Policy Branch (The Executive Office). Be ready for emergencies (nidirect)

We list only what official sources say. We do not rate how safe or risky anywhere is.

How these figures were gathered

  • Council links come from GOV.UK Local Links Manager, the list councils keep for GOV.UK. We opened each one on 2 November 2026; links that no longer worked are left out, and a few council sites blocked our automated check, which is noted beside the link.
  • Area is our measurement of the ONS generalised (clipped to the coastline) boundary, so it can differ slightly from official area figures.
  • Emergency department distances are straight lines from each settlement’s location on OpenStreetMap (found with Nominatim) to the centre of the hospital’s postcode. The list of emergency departments, minor injuries units and urgent care centres is nidirect’s; hospital postcodes are from each health and social care trust’s website, located with postcodes.io. Travel distances and times will be longer.
  • Phone and broadband figures are Ofcom’s council-level predictions for January 2026. Mobile coverage uses Ofcom’s signal thresholds; an operator’s network counts if its predicted signal meets them.
  • Coastline is our measurement of the ONS boundary clipped to mean high water, where it is not shared with another council. It includes estuary shores, so it is longer than the open coast; we only mention it above 20 km.
  • Census figures are planning prompts, not risk scores. The household figure uses 66 and over, as the census tables do.
  • Northern Ireland’s Census 2021 figures are from NISRA’s main statistics tables MS-E10, MS-A02 and MS-A26. NISRA adjusts its tables slightly to protect confidentiality, so totals may differ a little between tables.
  • Settlements are the largest by usual resident population in NISRA’s 2015 settlement classification (Census 2011 figures).
